The new year brings about thoughts of renewal, an end, and a fresh start. Reflecting back on yourself and your year can be revealing and emotional. However, it can be beneficial to notice where we have come from, where we have been, and where we are going. I invite you to spend some time in self-reflection noticing what the transition of a new year is for you.
Some questions you might ask yourself are:
- What is my proudest moment of this year?
- What was my best idea this year?
- What was my best memory from this year?
- What did you enjoy spending your time doing?
- Next year I want to: learn to _________, go see __________, and improve on ___________.
- What were your New Year Resolutions this year? How did that work for you?
To challenge yourself further, take time to answer these questions in different areas of your life, for example answer them all specifically for family/home life, work/career, or another area significant to you.
I saw an idea proposed by online blogger, Eileen Chadnick, that was worth considering in lieu of making a new year’s resolution. It is to consider choosing a theme, creating a mantra, or to even choose a powerful question that will create a positive intention to set as a guide for your year in 2018.
I thought this was an interesting concept because it seemed to shift the focus from typical resolutions that are generally tasks or boxes to check off and often fall by the wayside or are not brought to fruition. This alternative leaves an opening for what you want to bring forth in your life and who you want to be. It is ongoing and evolving throughout the year.
So what’s your theme, mantra/phrase, question, or word for 2018?
